Glimmer: A Heuristic Self-Search Inquiry into a beginning psychotherapists experience of hope Anna Kingi Abstract Hope is a silent observer who enters the consult rooms of psychotherapists daily. This known but often implicit factor in psychotherapy still requires a deeper understanding, particularly from the perspective of those providing psychotherapy. There a debate exists in the literature about whether hope is best understood as a noun or a verb and if it exists in the domains of thought, feelings, or spiritual belief. In psychotherapy practice, hope is considered to be an intrapsychic function or something that occurs interpersonally. An elusive phenomena such as hope requires a methodology that can illuminate subjective experience, make meaning, and develop a rich understanding of hope as it exists in psychotherapy. A Heuristic Self Search Inquiry addressed how hope is experienced in psychotherapy and focused on my subjective experience as a beginner psychotherapist. Key findings are my ‘discoveries’ illuminated by the heuristic research processes. I discovered that hope existed within the biopsychosociocultural-spiritual dimensions that were distinct and inseparably linked within the ‘whole self’. I also discovered a type of hope that was located within my personal and the collective unconscious of my ancestors. This moved me from experience into theory by illuminating the therapeutic action of hope in psychotherapy. Finally, I discovered the role of hope in carrying unintegrated trauma into consciousness through the process of healing. These discoveries have implications for the field of psychotherapy as it leads by example in asking practitioners to examine their own experience of hope in psychotherapy, so that they acquaint themselves deeply with this phenomena and, therefore, better equip themselves to locate hope in-between and within those people they work alongside.
